Global talent connect at Uppsala Pharmacometrics Summer School 2026

Hosted by the Department of Pharmacy at Uppsala University, UPSS is an annual two-week program for Ph.D. students. The program includes modeling sessions, lectures, and opportunities to network with peers and experts in model-informed drug development. This provides high value for doctoral students deciding on their next career steps and further developing their practical skill sets.

While the program is free to attend, participants must cover their own housing and travel expenses. To enable global talent to partake and to promote equal access to education, Pharmetheus offers a dedicated travel grant.

This year’s grant recipient from Pharmetheus is Dr. Manojkumar Venkatesan, a Pharm.D graduate and doctoral research scholar in pharmacometrics at COMPASS (Centre of Machine Learning, Pharmacometrics, Analytics and Simulation Solutions), JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty (JSS AHER), in India.

Pharmetheus Board appoints Jonas Möller as new CEO

Pharmetheus, founded in 2012, began its growth trajectory under the leadership of Peter Milligan, who became CEO in 2019. With his experience at companies like Pfizer and in-depth knowledge of the pharmacometrics field, he helped grow the company to a leading position, serving a diverse portfolio of pharmaceutical clients and contributing to drug development through its expertise in quantitative approaches.

The Board of Directors has clear expectations on the newly appointed CEO:

Karam Alali shares his experience of Uppsala Pharmacometric Summer School

Karam's journey

UPSS 2024 participant Karam Alali, originally from Syria, began his academic journey studying pharmacy and biotechnology before transitioning to pharmacometrics during his Ph.D. in Malaysia.

“The integration of math and pharmacy is what excites me most,” Karam explains. “Using programming and mathematical models to predict drug behavior felt like the perfect blend of my interests.”

“The UPSS experience was really rewarding,” he says. “I got to learn so much from experienced mentors, work with peers from all over the world, and dive into real-world challenges. It really helped me see things differently and sharpen my approach.”

The application for the 2026 summer school just opened, and Ph.D. students from around the world are encouraged to apply. Previous NONMEM experience is required, and the application consists of submitting an abstract and a poster presentation based on the abstract.

Karam’s participation in the Uppsala Pharmacometric Summer School (UPSS) was made possible by a travel and accommodation grant from Pharmetheus. “As part of the grant, he was invited to present his research at Pharmetheus’ reoccuring Scientific Meeting – a one hour slot each week dedicated to learning, knowledge sharing and discussion

“It was very rewarding to present my work to such an engaged and knowledgeable audience,” he says.

His work focuses on using population pharmacokinetic (popPK) models to compare insulin pharmacokinetics in patients with and without diabetes following acute ischemic stroke hyperglycemia. The goal of his research is to improve stroke outcomes through tailored dosing strategies.

Lourdes Cucurull-Sanchez joins Pharmetheus as Scientific Lead for the Quantative Systems Pharmacology (QSP) platform

– Bringing Lourdes onboard is an important step in putting further emphasis on developing our QSP capacity. Her experience will be of essence in meeting the growing demand for QSP services from our clients, says Marylore Chenel, Chief Research Officer and the recruiting manager.

The recruitment of a senior scientist within QSP, like Lourdes Cucurull-Sanchez, will allow the company to split their previous merged areas of PBPK/PBBM and QSP, into two separate focus areas.

Physiologically based biopharmaceutics (PBBM) is one of the company’s strengths, and with emerging guidance from FDA and EMA recognizing the use of PBPK within biopharmaceutics, formulation and drug product development, it will play a larger role in supporting Pharmetheus clients. Marylore Chenel explains:

– We believe there are more possibilities for clients to make use of PBPK/PBBM, and we aim to contribute to developing new methodology, tools and best practices. With Erik Sjögren, leading the PBPK/PBBM, and Lourdes Cucurull-Sanchez heading the QSP, Pharmetheus is armed to address the needs within both areas.

Pharmetheus passes 100 employees and moves to new office in central Uppsala
