Workshop

Forest plots in practical use: Implementation and interpretation

Interested in communicating the impact of covariates in pharmacometrics models? Join this workshop led by Pharmetheus’ experts and held on Tuesday 27th of June 2023 (09:00-17:00 CEST/GMT+1), in connection to PAGE in A Coruña, Spain.

Forest plots can be used to efficiently summarize the impact of covariates and other predictors on the primary and secondary parameters from population pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models. They can also be used to illustrate the outcome in important patient subgroups and relate the outcome to observed or hypothetical reference subjects. Forest plots, as recommended by the FDA in their latest Population PK guidance, is becoming a standard component of submission packages. .

Workshop overview

This workshop enables participants to understand Forest plots and be aware of the various assumptions that may influence how Forest plots can be interpreted. By the end of the workshop, the participants will also be familiar with the creation of Forest plots in R using modeling output NONMEM, PsN or R.

Workshop learning objectives

During the workshop, the participant will

  • get an in-depth understanding of how Forest plots should be interpreted given the variations in which point estimates and uncertainties can be derived and reference conditions can be set up.
  • learn how to create Forest plots in R based on output from different types of models and covariate modeling techniques, implemented in NONMEM and PsN.
  • get clarity on how Forest plots depend on the underlying modeling methodology and how “Full Model-like inference” can be obtained even from modeling approaches that generate parsimonious covariate models.

Workshop target audience

Scientists/Pharmacometricians who wish to get a deeper understanding of the interpretation and creation of Forest plots. The workshop is suitable for students as well as more experienced users.

Workshop description

The workshop will mix lectures and hands-on sessions to provide an in-depth understanding of Forest plots, both from a theoretical as well as practical perspective.

Speed consulting: There will be opportunities to discuss the participant’s own project in a dedicated discussion with an expert if of interest.

Workshop logistic details

The workshop will be held 09:00-17:00 (CEST/GMT+1) on Tuesday 27th of June 2023. It will take place in a hotel within walking distance from the venue. The fee includes two coffee breaks with snacks and a lunch.

Requirements

Participants are expected to have a working knowledge of R and at least a basic understanding of NONMEM. There will be hands-on exercises as part of the workshop schedule and the participants must bring their own laptops to be able to participate in these. However, there is no need to have any special software installed, except for a modern web browser. Example data and training material will be provided at the workshop.
